MEDICOOP’S KAROO DENTIST
Taking health technology to the people

We live in a world where health and medical technology is advancing at lightspeed, but how could that benefit our people’s health if the equipment does not reach rural people who live in sprawling rural areas such as the Karoo?

Dr. Gys Kleyn’s dentistry practice is in Oudtshoorn, but it would be more appropriate to refer to him as MediCoop’s dentist of the Karoo. The expanse of his services covers the small towns that we know as ostrich country - Calitzdorp, Ladismith, De Rust, Prince Albert – but as far as the Great Karoo – Willowmore and Beaufort-West.

When Dr Kleyn heard of a cooperative for the health and medical sector, he was interested because as a farmer and a dentist he understands the principle that a cluster of investors is stronger than the individual. He enquired and was pleasantly surprised to be consulted by an Afrikaans-speaking sales consultant that understood his financial needs and his language. Dr Kleyn was interested in a Sirona Orthophos XG – an x-ray machine that takes panoramic photos of the complete jaw. He needed this machine to be able to make a thorough diagnosis and to ascertain whether a patient needed orthodontic or other specialized dental treatment. It is especially useful to identify troublesome wisdom teeth.

Once acquired, the machine was added to Dr Kleyn’s practice and now other dentists from the area also use this advanced technology for the benefit of their patients in this way dental technology is now within the reach of the people of the Karoo.

LET MEDICOOP FINANCE YOUR PRACTICE
Read Juan’s Physio Kinetix story

MediCoop’s practice finance product was the key to launching biokineticist Juan Oosthuizen into a new career dimension – his own practice in Pretoria – Physio Kinetix. MediCoop’s alliance partner, Hitech Therapy, connected Juan with MediCoop. In his own words: “As a new business owner, MediCoop facilitated the financial ground that I needed to set up my practice in Pretoria with the advanced equipment that a biokineticist requires.

“The equipment took longer to reach me than expected, but I understand it related to import delays. Most importantly, MediCoop’s interest rates were really the most competitive on offer. As a new business owner, I needed quite an array of the equipment required by sports professionals for muscle injuries, and I am very grateful that MediCoop could facilitate the finance for my new business for at least the next five years.”

MEDICOOP’S FESTIVE SEASON CHARITY
A palliative home for baby patients without families

The Grove Schoombee foundation NPC was registered this year by three ladies from different backgrounds but with the same passion for children who are driven by hope!

Their first initiative is a baby home for neglected, abandoned and vulnerable babies in South Africa. The Foundation aims to support children diagnosed with cancer and their families by opening a palliative home that will create a warm and welcoming environment.

Daybreak House

In South Africa at least 2.8 million children are orphans - that is roughly 14%. of all children in South Africa. Alfréda Jonker, a conveyancer in real life, says “Opening Daybreak House is our attempt to make a difference to these tragic statistics. We need people to understand that abandoned and vulnerable babies are a looming crisis in our country.”

By opening Daybreak House in one of the more affluent neighbourhoods of Pretoria, we want to create awareness about the horrible and tragic reality facing many vulnerable and parentless babies today. We want to partner with communities to bring about change - one baby at a time.

Daybreak House will open in the New Year and will provide care for babies from birth to 2 years of age until foster families will be found for them. We are working closely with registered social workers and organisations to accomplish that. In the further future, we are looking at a toddler and a teenager house.

The Grove Schoombee Foundation NPC relies on donations and sponsors from companies that don't turn a blind eye to the voiceless and vulnerable children in South Africa.
